Diana was a Hull whaler which was trapped in arctic ice over the winter of 1866-7. The ship’s surgeon, Charles Edward Smith, kept a diary recording the crew’s privations during the long dark winter and his despair over their plight. The music is a setting of extracts from the diary telling the story from when they became trapped in September to their release from the ice the following March.
